Whirly Bird
Played by Count Basie and His Orchestra. Rufus "Speedy" Jones plays the drums here:
Notes:
- Starts with Count Basie on piano first.
- Jones is kicking ass! But he is still playing lightly and giving contrast so the piano can be heard
- Another tenor solo by Eddie Davis (see also Jumpin' at the Woodside for more solos by him)
- The drum solo gives me Whiplash vibes!
- You hear why they call him Rufus "Speedy" Jones! Look at how fast he's killing the solo!
- "Do your hears hang low ..." comped by Count Basie on the piano during Rufus' solo
- Bringing back in the winds/brass section at a slower tempo to make rufus feel like he's hit maximum speed (the song's called Whirly Bird for nothing).
- You see the bowler hats for the trumpets. These are mutes that they may use.
