Benny Goodman
Out of the midwest, the band toured all around the country. Specifically, it was very famous in LA (Los Angeles). He is the quint-essential swing-dance band, in contrast to Duke Ellington who tried to do various unique styles.
He almost packed up everything after an American tour without much money, but getting to LA creates a historic band. They mainly started playing what they wanted with the more niche swing tunes, and the audience absolutely loved it. Kids started dancing, and got the name "jitter bugs".
Someone recorded this into the Carnegie Hall Recordings, which became one of the most famous recordings in his career. Here he talks about how he had no idea this would catch on. Further, here's the feature song "Don't Be That Way" in AABA Jazz Form. Hear also the Patin Juba done by Gene Krupa on the bass drum.
He was the first guy to make the band more integrated. This was because it was:
- Benny on Clarinet (white)
- Gene Krupa (white)
- An african american Teddy Wilson on piano
- Vibraphone on lionel hampton (black)
You can hear the diversity of playing when they play as a quartet.
