Creoles (and of Color)

These are the Spanish/French marrying (white), or the French and Americans. Creoles of Color were the French marrying with the slaves in the area.

Being a slave in New Orleans (NO) was absent, so many slaves wanted to be in NO since most of these slaves would be set free. If you were an African-American in NO then you weren't assumed to be a slave! They had the following social class:

  1. Whites
  2. Creoles
  3. Creoles of Color
  4. African-Americans

African Americans lived primarily in uptown, compared to the French downtown:

The more the city got integrated, the more these musical influences would mix. The problem was that once the US got New Orleans, then the state took the path most southern states did where there were more laws stopping slaves from becoming free. Essentially, you had to get there before like 1803 when the US bought it to try to become free.
