(a)

S={YYNY,YNYN,NNNN,YYYY,...}, all combinations.

We see that |S|=24=16. We can draw a Venn Diagram to show what S is:

(b) It's reasonable since the components don't really depend on each other.

2

(c) A4={YYNY,YYNY,...}, really the last letter is Y. Here |A4|=8.

(d) B={YYYY,YYYN,YYNY,YNYY,NYYY}. Here |B|=5.

(e) A parallel system works iff component 1 works, or component 2 works, or ... for all 4 components. Here component 1 working is event A1, 2 working is A2, and same for 3 and 4.

Thus:

P=A1A2A3A4=i=14Ai

Here |P|=15 clearly since it's PS while NNNNP is the only element not in P but in S.

(f) Fails would just be the one element NNNN so then F={NNNN}. Clearly |F|=1. Alternatively:

F=P=(A1A4)=A1A2A3A4$$ (g)Aseriessystemonlyworksifall$A1,...,A4$work,so:

S_{w} = A_{1}\cap \dots \cap A_

(h)$Sf$forfailureisjust$(Sw)$so:

S_{f}= A_{1}' \cup A_{2}' \cap A_{3}' \cup A_
