Play-Finger-Play

The idea is to try to finger along with any woodwind instrument (ex: saxophone) the first time playing, then finger along the second time, then the third time try to play the part again. The goal is to get the muscle-ear coordination so that you are fingering the same notes that you are intending on playing.

You should:

  1. Choose a song (within your skill level and are comfortable playing; otherwise slow it down or choose a different song) that you want to play a phrase of (such as the 'A' part of standard AABA Jazz Form)
  2. Play along with the song, trying to makeup the mistakes of the parts that you don't know. Pay attention to what the harmony really is.
  3. Finger along with the same fingers. You want to reinforce what you're hearing and see if they start to disagree with your fingers. Always go with your head, not your gut.
  4. Play along and see if you can follow along better this time.
  5. Repeat as needed. I'd recommend 3 times so that you drill out that phrase at that point.
